Harley-Davidson RIDER'S EDGE® Classes

Have you had the dream to learn to ride a motorcycle or have not ridden for awhile and just want to get back in the saddle? Now is your chance. Smoky Mountain Harley-Davidson offers official NEW RIDER and SKILLED RIDER Harley-Davidson Rider's Edge® Classes! They include both in-class lessons and hands-on riding techniques that focus on developing the skills you need to ride with knowledge and confidence. We have an up-to-date fleet of Buell® Blast® motorcycles on a closed course right here at Smoky Mountain Harley-Davidson. Scroll down the page for all the details!

Classes will be held (rain or shine) every weekend March-October except for holidays OR major special event days at SMH-D.

THE NEW RIDER COURSE

The New Rider Course provides you with 25 hours of expert guidance from Motorcycle Safety Foundation® (MSF) and H-D® Certified Instructors.

  • In the classroom, you'll get to know the motorcycle you'll be riding and learn the basics of rider safety skills.
  • On the practice range, you'll learn braking and turning, along with maneuvers like controlling skids and surmounting obstacles.

Schedule:


Friday: 6pm - 9pm. Rider Handbook overview in classroom.

Saturday: 8am - 6pm. Riding provided motorcycles in a controlled, off-street environment. Learning how to operate a motorcycle safely with emphasis on the special skills and mental attitude necessary for dealing with traffic. VIP dealership tour with a “meet and greet.”

Sunday: 8am - 6pm. Riding, final testing, and graduation.


What you will need:


For the New Rider Course, you'll need a valid automobile driver's license or learner's permit, and have the ability to ride a bicycle. For the riding portion, the H-D® dealer will provide you with a motorcycle suited for the course. You'll have to bring:

  • A heavy, long-sleeve shirt or jacket
  • Jeans, chaps, or leather pants
  • Over-the-ankle, sturdy footwear
  • Full-fingered gloves
  • A helmet that meets DOT requirements
  • Eyewear
  • Rain suit or jacket (not required, but handy in case of rain)


Getting your motorcycle license:

When you finish the course, you'll get a MSF Basic RiderCourse® Completion Card. With a “certificate of completion” upon graduation, you will be exempt from taking the written and riding test at the DMV in Tennessee to get the motorcycle endorsement on your license. However, the certificate is not reciprocal to other states and most likely will not be honored at out-of-state DMV’s. The card may also score you a discount on motorcycle insurance. Ask your insurance provider for details!

 


 

THE SKILLED RIDER COURSE

Take your riding to an all-new level with the Rider's Edge® Skilled Rider Course.  Created for experienced riders, it offers advanced tips andtechniques thathelp you own the road.  The course runs 1-2 days and is built on the curriculum of the MSF Basic RiderCourse 2 Suite.  It is taught by devoted MSF and H-D® Certified Instructors.  When you're done, you'll earn a MSF Basic RiderCourse 2 completion card that may qualify you for a discount on motorcycle insurance.


The course focuses on improving the following skills:

  • Control at low speeds
  • Risk Management
  • Limited space maneuvers
  • Cornering judgment
  • Swerving and stopping quickly on straights and in curves
  • Multiple curve maneuvers and surmounting objects


What will you need to register:

  • A street-ready motorcycle (your own or a rental)
  • Motorcycle endorsement, permit or license (check with the H-D® dealer for details)
  • Proof of valid motorcycle insurance

What you will need:
