Overview

As a child, my grandfather took me to Ralph Maddux's Harley-Davidson® dealership. Ralph never had more than two or three motorcycle in a shop no larger than a living room; however, that was plenty of room for my imagination. My grandfather had owned Harley-Davidson® motorcycle, and whether he knew it or not, he was passing his love on to me. I got my first bike when I was seven and motorcycles have been in my life ever since. While attending graduate school, I pasted a photograph of a Heritage Edition Softail® to my computer screen. Although I had ridden motorcycles most all of my life, I had never seen anything that compared to this machine. The photograph inspired me and reminded me of the sacrifices my family had made for me (I was the only person in my family to ever go to college). During that time, I often imagined riding that Harley-Davidson® motorcycle on open roads and experiencing adventures far beyond my hometown of Baxter, Tennessee. Although I could not afford to purchase the motorcycle, I continued to dream. Finally, I purchased my first Harley-Davidson® motorcycle, a 1964 FLH (I still own). As to why I wanted to become a Harley-Davidson® and Buell dealer, since selling my construction business in 2001, I sought to own another business. Not just any business, but a business that I am passionate about. This led me back to my roots and my love for motorcycles. There is something about Harley-Davidson® that seems to bring individuals together into a collective community, a brotherhood. I noticed it the first time I rode my machine and received the salute by a fellow rider. It is the relationship between man and machine and the kinship among riders that motivated me to become a dealer. In 2003, Harley-Davidson® invited Monet and I to Milwaukee to present our dealership plans. Sitting in a room that included eight members from Harley-Davidson®'selection committee, I laid out my ideas. I wanted to have a dealership focused on the customer, a place that represented the Motor Company's values, a staff that appreciated and welcomed all, and in general "The best damn Harley-Davidson® dealership anywhere". When you walk into Smoky Mountain Harley-Davidson®, you can experience our business plan first hand. If you have never visited us here at Smoky Mountain, I encourage you to make it a point. I think you will agree that we have created something very special. The Harley-Davidson® Mission states "We fulfill Dreams through the experiences of Motorcycling", it was my dream to be part of this heritage and now I am fortunate to do my part to see that Harley-Davidson® continues to fulfill their Mission.

Ride safe and I hope to see you soon.

Sincerely,

Scott Maddux
